It may be stupid

to write a list
as simple as this,
but to get here
takes years:
New Jersey night,
nine windows
open, Yo La Tengo
softly strumming.
If you know me,
you know the rest.

It takes years to get there, and half a second to take it all back and call it stupid...

I think it was Steiner who said the obviousness of mysteries inherent in the commonplace are embarrassing to us because they're seamlessly resistant to most efforts to make them more nuanced or complex.

It's not the emotion that's stupid, it's the emotion that's calling US stupid, right?

1) George Steiner once wrote about this.
2) Simple object are really frustrating to talk about.
3) Their obviousness is their best guard against attempts to talk about their strangeness.
